What type of wood is Thermowood?
Is Thermowood a Hardwood or Softwood?
Thermowood comes from Scandinavian softwood timber that has been heat treated.
Thermal Modification
The patented production process is based on the gradual thermal modification of the wood, wherein the chemical and physical properties undergo a permanent change. Thermal Modification enhances Nordic wood’s properties throughout the wood. During the process, the wood is treated with steam and heat only, no chemicals are used at any stage of the process.
The power of heat and steam The Thermal Modification process enhances wood’s properties from to end to end. The entailed wood is treated with steam and heat only, no chemicals are used at any stage of the process. The temperature inside the thermal modification chamber is slowly raised to 212°C and the whole process can last up to 110 hours. Water is needed for two reasons: because the temperature rises so high, the water prevents the wood from burning during the thermo-treatment process. Water is also used to ensure the high quality of the final product. At the end of the process, moisture is added to the chamber to prevent cracking and ensures a long life for the final product. When the process is complete, the moisture percentage of the wood is around 4–7%, which makes Thermowood products extremely stable and durable.
What is the lifespan of Thermowood?
Thermowood Decking Maintenance and Care
Lunawood Thermowood decking is a beautiful and ecological wood material that retains its shape throughout all seasons. With proper surface treatment, the terrace retains its beautiful appearance and remains in good condition for many years. Follow these instructions to protect your Deck against harsh weather conditions and wear, and to reduce natural cracking of the wood.
Lunawood recommends regular surface treatment for Thermowood decking when used in applications subject to varying weather conditions. Surface treatment will help to retain the original colour and reduce cracking and splintering that are typical to wood materials over time.
If left untreated, Thermowood will turn a silver-grey colour due to UV rays. The beautiful grey colour lends an elegant appearance and does not affect the wood’s resistance to decay. Note that clear UV-protective terrace oil without brown pigment does not prevent natural greying.
